Are all osteopaths registered health practitioners?
In Germany, only medical doctors or licensed alternative practitioners (Heilpraktiker) are legally permitted to provide medical diagnoses. Diagnosis is essential for planning effective treatment and ruling out other underlying conditions. Consequently, osteopaths practicing in Germany must also hold a license as a 'Heilpraktiker' or a medical doctor to operate legally.
Is osteopathic treatment covered by public health insurance?
Most public health insurance providers (GKV) in Germany now cover a portion of the costs for osteopathy. Typically, they reimburse between 3 to 6 sessions per year at fixed rates. Usually, you will need a medical recommendation or referral from your GP or a specialist first. We strongly recommend contacting your specific health insurance company to confirm your coverage details.
What should I expect during my first osteopathy session?
Your initial appointment centers on a detailed medical history and a comprehensive physical exam to identify the root cause of your symptoms. Based on this holistic evaluation, we apply manual therapy techniques specifically tailored to your needs. The first session usually lasts about 60 minutes.
Do health insurance providers in Berlin cover the costs of osteopathic treatments?
Yes, most statutory health insurers in Germany reimburse at least part of the fee. Each provider has different bonus programs or fixed session limits. In almost all cases, you must present a medical prescription to the insurer to claim your reimbursement.
Will I receive an invoice for insurance?
Yes. Following your treatment, patients are provided with an invoice issued according to the Fee Schedule for Alternative Practitioners (GebüH). This document can then be submitted to your health insurance provider for potential reimbursement.
How does osteopathy differ from physiotherapy and chiropractic care?
Osteopathy takes a holistic view, looking at how joints, muscles, fascia, organs, and the nervous system interact. Physiotherapy is primarily focused on rehabilitation after injury. Chiropractic care focuses on the spine and nervous system. While the methods differ, these professions often complement each other for optimal patient health.
